What is Chalk Pastel?
Chalk pastels are a versatile medium made from powdered pigment combined with a binder. Pastel chalk comes in pencil, stick or pressed powder form. I use all 3 forms to create different textures, fur types and fine details.
Using high-quality pastel paper is important in creating a hyper realistic, detailed portrait. I use Pastelmat Pastel paper which has a unique texture that is velvety and lightly abrasive which holds the layers of pigment tightly without the need for fixatives. This paper is also acid-free which makes it archival quality to ensure longevity and the colors stay vibrant for years to come.
Framing a Pastel Drawing
It is important to use a mat when framing a pastel drawing to create a space between the artwork and the glass. Pastel drawings should never touch glass as it could smudge the drawing. It is also important to use Mat board to create a backing to mount the portrait as well as acid-free mounting tape to secure the portrait. I recommend using a professional framer to frame your pastel drawing as it could be a timely, delicate process. Each portrait comes with a framing guide, and I am always available for any questions you have!
